Haven’t completed the classroom portion yet?

Take the Texas DPS approved classroom course online, then return to Summit Defense for your required range instruction and shooting qualification.

What to expect

During your appointment, your instructor will:
Review essential range and handgun-safety procedures
Explain how the qualification will be conducted
Provide the required range instruction
Administer the LTC handgun proficiency demonstration
Complete the applicable instructor portion of your LTC training documentation when requirements are successfully met
Explain your next steps in the Texas LTC application process

Plan for approximately two hours, although the exact duration can vary.

What to Bring

Please bring:
A valid government-issued photo ID
Your LTC training documentation from your online or classroom provider, if applicable
A safe, functioning handgun suitable for the qualification
The required amount of appropriate ammunition
Eye and ear protection
Closed-toe shoes
A shirt with a reasonably high neckline
A hat with a brim, if desired

Avoid low cut shirts because hot cartridge casings can fall inside loose clothing.

If you need equipment, contact Summit Defense before your appointment to ask about available firearm and ammunition equipment packages.

Important: This is a Qualification, Not a Beginner Course

The LTC shooting qualification is designed to demonstrate basic handgun safety and proficiency. It is not intended to teach someone how to shoot for the first time.

You should already be able to:
Safely load and unload your handgun
Keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction
Follow range commands
Operate your handgun independently
Fire accurately enough to complete the required course

If you are new to handguns or are not yet comfortable handling one independently, we recommend scheduling private firearms training before attempting the qualification.

Want to Prepare Before Qualifying?

Private preparation sessions are available for students who want to improve their handgun handling, accuracy or confidence before completing the official qualification.

Preparation training may cover:
Safe handgun operation
Loading and unloading
Grip, stance and sight alignment
Trigger control
Range commands and procedures
Practice at qualification distances
Identifying skills that need improvement

A preparation session does not guarantee a passing score, but it can help you arrive better informed and more confident.

Complete Your Texas LTC Shooting Requirement

The Texas LTC proficiency demonstration includes required range instruction and a handgun shooting qualification administered by a qualified Texas LTC instructor.
Summit Defense will guide you through the range process, explain each course of fire and help ensure you understand the safety requirements before the qualification begins.

This session is appropriate for:
• Students who completed an approved online Texas LTC course
• Students who need the in-person range portion of their LTC training
• Applicants who are already comfortable safely handling and firing a handgun
• Individuals who prefer clear, patient and professional instruction

Yes. If you completed the classroom portion through an approved online or in-person provider, you may schedule the required range instruction and proficiency demonstration with Summit Defense. Bring the documentation provided by your classroom-course instructor.

The qualification itself is not a beginner handgun class. You should already know how to safely operate and fire your handgun. If you are inexperienced or uncomfortable, schedule private preparation training first.

Plan for approximately two hours for range instruction, safety procedures, the shooting qualification and documentation. Timing may vary based on range conditions and the number of participants.

Not necessarily. Contact Summit Defense before booking to ask about available equipment package options. Availability and additional charges may apply.

Summit Defense will provide the current ammunition requirement when confirming your appointment. Bring additional ammunition if you are also scheduling practice or preparation before the official qualification.

Your instructor will explain which requirements were not met and discuss appropriate next steps. Additional instruction and a separately scheduled qualification attempt may be recommended.

Range details and arrival instructions will be provided when your appointment is confirmed.
